Regardless of controversy and predictions, my seasonal tradition has me determining which kind of wine I should drink while rooting for or watching each of the best picture nominees. Starting alphabetically with Anora, I go against its frontrunner status by saying it reminds me of a low-key

sparkling wine—not as rich as the Champagne that inspired it. B come next: The Brutalist provides rich, linear structure, much like a fine Bordeaux. For C, Conclave offers Catholic ritual, wine of course, and suited to the story’s Italian setting, a Barolo. C includes A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic that mixes folk traditions with creativity, kind of like a zinfandel. D means Dune 2…and like I thought back when the first Dune earned a best picture nomination, the movie’s key drink suits: water, not wine. Next comes E and Emilia Perez whose controversy upended its frontrunner status. Whether or not its 13 nominations lead to big victory, the movie always featured a potpourri of qualities, a sangria of components. Coming from Brazil, the characters in I’m Still Here speak Portuguese, and while no one calls the story sweet, solidity and lengthy timeline fit a vintage port. The Nickel Boys stands out for creative editing, kind of like regional wine maker C.G. D’Arie invents. Meanwhile, The Substance offers the weirdest options, and you can find an aperitif called Bizarro. Finally, Wicked provides the easiest combo: pink of course, sparkling rose, but with a garnish of mint because green rules. Who rules at the Oscars? Find out March 2.
